About Edme Dominguez

Edmé Domínguez Reyes is Associate Professor in Peace and Development Studies at the School of Global Studies, Gothenburg University, Sweden. Her field is International Relations with a Ph.D. in Political 91̽ with a specialisation on the Soviet Union-Eastern Europe, from the Institut d’Etudes Politiques of Paris. Her first area of research and publications was on Soviet foreign policy towards Latin America. Since the beginning of the 1990s her works and publications have focused on Regionalism in the case of NAFTA and Mexico, and on gender issues related to citizenship, labour organising, transnational activism, gender consequences of free trade agreements, and international political economy. She has also made research on women’s political participation at local levels in the case of Bolivia. Her research has concentrated on the cases of Mexico, El Salvador and Bolivia. Areas of interest My research areas during 1975-1989 concentrated on Soviet perceptions of Latin American socioeconomic problems and Soviet policy towards Latin America and published several articles mostly on Soviet perceptions towards the Central American crisis.

Since the beginning of the 1990s I started working on Regionalism on the social implications of NAFTA for Mexico and on gender issues regarding academics, citizenship and International Relations. I studied women and citizenship through a project that compared women’s perceptions and attitudes towards the concept of citizenship in rural and urban areas of Mexico. Another project of research studied women workers networks in the NAFTA region (financed by SIDA 2004-2006).

Within this project my research my partner, Cirila Quintero from El Colegio de la Frontera Norte in Mexico and me have tried to follow the strategies of labour organizing of women workers at maquiladora industries through the case of several NGOs and some trade unions situated mostly in the North Eastern part of the Mexican border.

As part of this project and together with a number of Mexican colleagues we were able to write a publish and article at Feminist Economics at the end of 2012 questioning the benefits of maquiladora work for women and also the assumed unity of the workers in the South regarding the issue of Global labour standards.As part of the project on women workers in the NAFTA area I initiated   the project: “Global Economic Restructuring in El Salvador: Women’s Voices and Agency facing maquila work and migrant remittance” financed by SIDA during 2008-2010.As a result of this project we have just published an article: The fight for improved labour standards: women labour organising on the Northern Mexican border and El Salvador , at Third World Thematics. online version 2019. Current research.- Other areas of research have been: women's political involvement after the success of quotas in the case of Bolivia. I have studied, together with Bolivian researchers women elected at the municipal councils in rural and urban environments.The result of this research has been article: Dominguez R., E. & Pacheco O., M., (2018). Currently I'm working on a new project called "Between ‘tradition’ and ‘modernity’: Exploring the intersecting and conflictual spaces of women’s political participation in highland Bolivia" together with Anders Burman. We try to to explore how women in the Bolivian Andes navigate ‘modern’, ‘indigenous’ and ‘hybrid’ forms of local political governance respectively and under what circumstances they are able to capitalize politically on cultural ideals, institutions and gender equality policies.

Another area of research in which I'm involved is Gender and trade: looking att the different gender perspectives of free trade agreements. I am currently analysisng the possible gender consequences of the new Movernization agreement between the EU and Mexico signed during the Spring 2018.  

Teaching and tutoring The interests developed within my research have reflected themselves in the courses I have taught. My experience in teaching started in Mexico after my doctor examination, in 1981 and has continued since then in the US, Spain, Argentina, again Mexico and Sweden up to now.

My teaching has gone from the history of the Soviet Union to all kinds of subjects regarding Latin America. But also through basic courses on International relations, development theories and method of research, gender and development and international relations to theories of globalization.

I am currently teaching on gender and economics, gender and Global Political economy, Emerging Powers in the Global South, Latin American relations with the external world and Social and Political problems within Latin America.
