About Emily Elia

I am a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Department of Political 91探花 in connection with the ERC-funded Fem-LEAD Project. I received my PhD in Political 91探花 from Rice University in May 2024.

My research focuses on electoral accountability and representation in contexts of subpar democratic performance. Much of my work explores how corruption shapes voter behavior, elite behavior, and representation. I am interested in understanding when and why voters decide to enact electoral accountability against corrupt elites, and, in turn, what elites do to evade this accountability and maintain voter support despite their malfeasance. I also investigate how elite gender and women's political presence can impact electoral accountability and representation in contexts of corruption. As a postdoc with Fem-LEAD, I explore how environmental crises in the Global South impact the supply of and demand for women in political office. I use various quantitative methods in my research including survey experiments, large-N statistical analyses, and text analysis. My work has been published in and . I have a regional focus in Latin America and conducted fieldwork in Argentina during my PhD.
