About Henric Benesch

I am trained as an architect at Chalmers University of Technology and received my PhD in design at HDK at the University 91̽»¨ in 2010, and since 2023, I am also an associate professor. Since 2010, I have been involved in a number of interdisciplinary research projects in a national context: ‘Passion for the Real’ (VR 2006-2008), ‘Interventions - Art in Urban Life and Urban Development’ (VR 2007-2009), and ‘In-Between Place - The Interaction between Citizen Initiatives and Invited Participation in Urban Planning: An Interaction Research Project’ (Formas 2011-2013), as well as in a European context: ‘TRADERS - Training Art and Design Researchers in Participation for Public Space’ (FP7-PEOPLE-2013-ITN 2013-2017) and ‘Critical Heritage Studies and the Future of Europe_Towards an Integrated, Interdisciplinary and Transnational Training Model in Cultural Heritage Research and Management’ (H2020-MSCA-ITN 2017-2021), where my focus areas have been design and critical and institutional perspectives on participation and knowledge creation.

Since 2013, I have been active at the Centre for Critical Heritage Studies (CCHS) where I am currently working on an ongoing project - Hidden Sites - focusing on making heritage sites visible, problematizing, and making them accessible based on often limited ideas about historiography, accessibility, and use.

Together with Onkar Kular, also at HDK-Valand, I work with design from a literacy, democracy and rights perspective - - and how design education has changed and developed, and will need to change and develop, over time.

Since 2023, I have been the dean of the Faculty of Fine, Applied and Performing Arts after having been vice-dean during the period 2018-2023.
