About Oscar Sebastian Tellini

Research project

In my research, I analyse the animal configurations in a set of Latin American cultural materials (literary texts, museum exhibitions, TV cooking programs) from the 1950s and 1960s. By combining Animal Studies and Ecocriticism, I aim to discuss how the meanings of animals were shaped in Latin American culture during a period of industrialization, when both animal exploitation intensified and animal habitats were violently destroyed. In particular, I argue that these animal configurations produce a critique of the violent consequences of the extractivist practices of the 1950s and 1960s for non-human communities and the environment, while they problematize racial, gender and social class issues related to the narratives of extractivism.
