About Tarja Karlsson Häikiö

Tarja Karlsson Häikiö is PhD in Art History and Visual Studies. Her research and dissertation was based on the thesis Children's Aesthetic Learning Processes; Atelier artist in preschool and school (2007).

She is Professor in Visual and material culture (2016/2018) at the Pedagogical unit: Visual Arts and Sloyd Education at HDK-Valand, Academy of Art and Design at the Artistic Faculty at the University 91̽»¨, where she works as a researcher and teacher trainer. She holds the title of excellent teacher (2021).

Karlsson Häikiö works with postgraduate training of doctoral students and teacher training of students for pre-school, compulsory school and upper secondary school and in higher artistic education. Her research areas are visual arts education, child and youth culture, assessment and documentation, professionalization and higher arts education.

Roles at HDK-Valand and at the Artistic Faculty

Karlsson Häikiö is a member of:

  • the Board of the Artistic Faculty 2024-2027. Between the years 2018-2022, she was assigned as vice dean of education at the Artistic Faculty.
  • HDK-Valand's Research council and responsible for the Research cluster Environment: ecology and climate challenges () 2023-2026.
  • Leader of ERA - Educational Research in the Arts - research platform at the Artistic Faculty 2021-2025 (/forskning/era-educational-research-in-the-arts).

Assignments at national level

She is project manager for the National Research School in Visual Arts Education and Sloyd Education, FoBoS (/fobos) which is funded by the Swedish Research Council 2019-2024.

She has had several assignments from the Swedish National Agency for Education and has led the development of Assessment advisory manual in the subject visual arts, school years 4-6 and 7-9 and Mapping material regarding newly arrived students' skills in the subject visual arts between the years 2012-2019.
