About Ulf Smith

Professor, Principal Investigator, MD, PhD, FRCP

Ulf Smith is Professor of Internal Medicine and Director of the Lundberg Laboratory for Diabetes Research at the Sahlgrenska Academy, University 91̽, Sweden. He has held many administrative positions including Chair of the Institute of Medicine, Chief-of-Medicine and Executive Medical Director of the Sahlgrenska University Hospital. He has been member of the Scientific Board of the Sahlgrenska Academy and Dean of Research of the Academy.

Professor Smith is a diabetologist and his research is focused on the pathogenesis of Type 2 diabetes and its complications. He has published around 500 scientific papers in the field and received many honors for his work including being a Fogarty Scholar at the NIH, Bethesda, USA.

Professor Smith is Past President of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes and Chair of the European Foundation for the Study of Diabetes. He is also Past President of the Alliance for Biomedical Research in Europe. He is chairman/member of several Scientific Advisory Boards. He has currently a position as member of the European Commission Scientific Panel for Health at the European Commission.
