European Graduation Day (October Workshop)
Every October CERGU and CES co-organize a seminar which is open to the general public, called the European Graduation Seminar, part of the European Graduation Day. This public event is held just before the European Studies’ annual graduation ceremony where the graduates receive their diploma, and where the director of CERGU presents the annual Rutger Lindahl Award for best master’s thesis within European Studies.

Theme
This workshop aims at discussing current challenges for minority languages and associated minority communities within Europe, with a particular focus on Western Europe. As grounds for the discussion, there will be presentations on the following cases: Scots and Bavarian (Loester), Occitan and Catalan (Hawkey), and Basque and Galician (Järlehed). Challenges comprise both affordances and possibilities, and the workshop addresses social, cultural, political, economic, technological and theoretical issues conditioning both the use and status of particular minority languages, and the way we understand and value notions such as ‘minority language’ and ‘linguistic minority’.

Theme: At a challenging time of its existence, the chessboard of European Union politics is changing with a string of new actors selected to the top leadership positions of the EU. When Jean-Claude Juncker takes up his post as the next President of the European Commission, he will start working with a new team of Commissioners. Joining the leadership team of the European Union will be another two individuals, namely the new President of the European Council and the High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy. These candidates will have to be approved by the European Parliament before they begin their work on 1 November 2014 –a parliament that now consists of new untested constellations of political parties after the EP elections in May. All these internal changes to the governance of the European Union take place against a backdrop of serious security challenges in the Union’s eastern and southern neighborhood and the continuing festering of the financial crisis. Are the governance structures of the European Union fit for purpose? Do the current changes in the top-leadership team represent a ‘window of opportunity’ for the European Union to organize its work in new ways? What are the main challenges for the European Union in its relations with member states at a time of increasing Euroscepticism?

Theme
With the collapse of communism in Central and Eastern Europe hopes were running high that the division of Europe into two parts, the West and the East, would finally come to an end. Two decades later the dual framing of Central and Eastern Europe as simultaneously in Europe and not yet European still remains. This workshop will discuss this implicit opposition in Europe. The workshop will explore questions such as: What is Central and East Europe: as a region, as an area of studies? How were the concepts of Central and Eastern Europe historically constructed? What demarcations do they imply today? How is the concept of Europe used for “othering” central and eastern parts of Europe? Who are “the others” for the Central and Eastern Europeans themselves?
