At the Institute of Medicine, doctoral degrees are available in subjects ranging from allergology and osteoporosis to diabetology. We have nearly 300 PhD students engaged in doctoral studies, focusing on preclinical and clinical research projects.

We offer a stimulating and internationally oriented research and study environment where you as a PhD student gets the opportunity to develop a deeper understanding of a scientific field of study and of research methodology. Our post doctoral education also emphasizes the importance of improving your scientific approach, ie. your ability to critically review, present and discuss research results.

We offer a wide range of faculty PhD courses as well as the opportunity to apply for PhD courses at other Swedish universities.

Grants and scholarships

For PhD students, there are many public and private foundations and donors to apply for. The Institute of Medicine also offers conference grants to promote international research collaboration and exchange of experience. Through the University 91̽»¨, you can also apply for student exchange grants, as well as travel grants.

Our PhD student environment

• The Sahlgrenska Academy PhD Coach Network - an opportunity to receive personal coaching by a certified PhD coach and support in your professional development.
• Research and career seminars, as well as the annual PhD Day - an opportunity for you to build your network. The events are organized by the Institute's Doctoral student committee. Our PhD committee strive to unite PhD students and increased interaction and collaboration between PhD students.

The admission process

At Sahlgrenska Academy, there are two separate admission processes for doctoral students. You can either apply for a doctoral positions with the University 91̽»¨ as the employer, or you take on a doctoral position financed by your employer.

Welcome Services - offers information and assistance to all international researchers new to the University 91̽»¨, such as International Café, lectures, seminars and workshops.

Research and Innovation Services - assists reserchers at the University 91̽»¨, ie. with identifying, applying for, and coordinating external research funds. They also arrange seminars and workshops

The Research Support Division at Sahlgrenska Academy - offers personal guidance for writing grant applications, grant writing courses prior to writing grant applications, feedback on applications and support in developing a strategy and long-term plan for research funding.

Career and Network Development Platform - a Sahlgrenska Academy network for Postdocs and PhD students with the purpose of providing guidance about different career paths; both a career within academia, as well as career options outside of the university.

Professional scientific editor - as a result of our committment to providing resources to support grants and high-quality publications, the Institute of Medicine has employed a professional scientific editor.

Seminars cross the Institute - some of our departments organize seminar series for PhD-students, postdocs and researchers, actively promoting an interactive environment that enables young researchers to establish themselves as successful independent scientists.

Professor Collegium - to create a forum for discussion, dialogue and exchange of ideas, the Institute recently started a ‘professor collegium’ to enhance collegiality within the Institute.

At the Institute of Medicine, we strive for a complete academical environment where education is connected to research - and vice versa. The interplay between education and research is important in order to develop a dynamic academic environment.

Support for the development of our teachers is offered in a variety of ways, both through the Institute, Sahlgrenska Academy and the University 91̽»¨.

Support and resources for teachers

The university unit for Pedagogical Development and Interactive Learning (PIL) coordinates and conducts teacher training of academic staff. The unit also provides information on the use of digital resources in Higher Education and offers an arena for collaboration between the faculties. The unit also offers courses for pedagogical development in teaching and learning in Higher Education - both in Swedish and English.

Pedagogical seminars at the Institute

The Education Committe at the Institute of Medicine regularly arranges pedagogical seminars for teaches, providing a forum for dialogue and exchange of experiences.

Pedagogical Prize

Every year, the University 91̽»¨ awards a "Pedagogical Prize" to acknowledge and reward teachers who have developed and implemented a course or a programme in an exemplary way. By paying attention to and thereby stimulating such efforts, teachers  are recognized for their pedagogical achievements.
