Making emotions: An investigation of the infrastructure of emotions in relation to the actor's practice
Short description
'Emotions are not reactions to the world; they are your construction of the world.' This quote is from Lisa Feldman Barrett's How Emotions Are Made: The Secret Life of the Brain (2017).
According to Barrett, emotions are not innate. Instead, they arise when external stimuli cause increased bodily activity (arousal), which we interpret based on context and past experience.
Barrett's theories reflect the way emotions are portrayed on stage. On stage, emotions are created in real time, where the actor's heightened bodily energy, interacting with external circumstances, is perceived by the audience as an emotional expression. The audience thus plays a key role as a co-creator of emotion.
How can the actor use these insights creatively? And is there emotional knowledge within the actor that can be used elsewhere?
