Short description

This project aimed to shed light on how patient and public involvement (PPI) has been conceptualized and implemented in healthcare. Through a systematic mapping of systematic reviews, the following research questions were answered:
• In which contexts is PPI conducted in healthcare?
• What are the characteristics of participants involved in PPI? (e.g. which age groups, which types of diseases)?
• Which different frameworks and models for PPI are used in healthcare?
• Which outcome measures have been reported for PPI?
• Which findings and research gaps have been identified?
The mapping review was presented at the ICIC2023 conference in Antwerp and published in the journal BMJ Open, where it became the most read article in October 2024. The project has been completed, but a new PPI hub project has been initiated in 2024, building on the lessons learned from this project.

An article has been published in BMJ Open. It contains an overview of how patients, informal carers and the general public can be involved at the organizational and governance level in healthcare. It can serve as a resource for anyone interested in enhancing patient and public involvement in healthcare, from healthcare managers to researchers to patient representatives and even policymakers. Read more about it here.
