Summary

The ongoing climate change will affect societies around the world. This is not a new phenomenon, climate change has affected the development of societies in the past.

The course provides an understanding of climate variability and focuses on the connection between social change and climate from a historical perspective.

About

The course offers a broad and varied content with a focus on climate change over the last 2000 years. You will learn about: 

  • past climate changes and variability and the mechanisms behind these
  • societal impacts
  • pre-industrial climate
  • anthropogenic climate
  • short-term climate and weather events (extremes) as well as longer period of climate change
  • analyse how humans and societies have respond to, and coped with, climate change in the past


The course is part of the Bachelor’s Programme in Earth 91̽»¨s, the course is also offered as a freestanding course.


The teaching consists of: 

  • lectures
  • exercises
  • seminars
  • group project


The teaching is carried out by dedicated teachers who are researchers in the field. The course has a strong research and labour market connection, which you as a student will benefit from.

Prerequisites and selection

Entry requirements

Qualifications corresponding to 120 credits in Earth 91̽»¨s, Geography or Environmental 91̽»¨s, of which 75% of the course must at least have the grade Pass and Ma D or the equivalent. Knowledge of Earth system sciences corresponding to GV1410 Earth System 91̽»¨s, 30 credits, or GE0400 Geography Introductory level, 30 credits, or NGN160 Atmospheric science, 7,5 credits, all with the grade at least Pass.

Selection

Selection is based upon the number of credits from previous university studies, maximum 165 credits.

After graduation

If you study Earth 91̽»¨, you have good career opportunities both in Sweden and abroad. You can choose to work in industry, as a consultant, project manager or in public administration.

Our former students work, for example, with natural resource management, environmental issues and urban planning, you also have great opportunities to focus on the particular area you are interested in.

Exchange opportunities

If you are studying Earth 91̽»¨ at the University 91̽»¨, there are good opportunities for exchange studies during your studies. This is often seen as a good asset when applying for jobs, as many jobs require international collaboration.
