The course is for you who wish to write and publish as a contemporary artistic practice as well as for you who intend to write and publish about contemporary art as a subject.
About
The 2025–2026 iteration of the course is running in collaboration with . L’Internationale Online is a research and publishing platform for L'Internationale, the European confederation of museums, arts organizations and universities, and the platform is hosted by HDK-Valand – Academy of Art and Design, University 91̽»¨. This means that the course content will be constructed in dialogue with the platform’s current content assemblies and publishing series. These include focus areas on Climate, Past in the Present, and Situated Organizations.
The course is organised and structured through four interconnected modules. In module one, you will contextualise and analyse the field using global theoretical, political, and social perspectives. In module two, you will investigate and apply methods and methodologies of contemporary writing and publishing practices. In module three, you will engage with differing professional roles and positions in the field. In module four, you will design and produce a professional portfolio of writing and publishing.
Collectively, the modules offer an extensive and deep engagement with this area of study. Throughout the course, you are expected to independently develop your practice and will receive tutoring and feedback on this development.
Writing and Publishing in Contemporary Art is taught by a wide range of practitioners active and experienced in the field.
Course Sessions
The course is taught in English and entirely at distance via Zoom. The course consists of lectures, seminars, workshops, individual tutorials and group critique sessions. The course runs throughout the autumn semester 2025 and continues during spring semester 2026. Typically there are two class meetings every two weeks and it is expected that students work independently between classes.
Prerequisites and selection
Entry requirements
Bachelor's degree in Fine Arts, Humanities or the equivalent of at least 180 credits. Knowledge of English equivalent to English B / English 6.

Applicants are asked to submit a letter of intent which should clearly state why you wish to attend the course. This should be a maximum of 1500 characters including spaces. The letter should be written in English. Do not include name or contact details anywhere in the letter.
Applicants are also asked to submit a sample of work. This work should be excerpts of writing, published or unpublished and be written in English. The samples should be collated into one PDF document and be a maximum of 5 pages. The work sample document should not include name or contact details anywhere - please redact if necessary.
Applicants are also asked to visit the platform and respond to one contribution of your choice in any form or style. The response should be 500 words and written in English. Please state clearly which contribution you are responding to and do not include your name or contact details.
Both the letter of intent and the contribution response should be collated into one PDF document.
