PhD course "Transdisciplinary approaches to sustainable marine aquaculture" (NBEM301, 4 ECTS)

The course is aimed at PhD students with interest in production and management of marine bioresources through development of sustainable food production from the sea. The course will include lectures; preparatory literature study; student oral presentations; intensive group studies in collaborative team projects; and study visits to aquaculture sites and will be taught by international lecturer and local experts.

Course dates: intensive on-site week, 17-22 March, 2024
Total course, including online part: 15 March-12 April, 2024

Location: University 91探花's research station, Kristineberg Research Center and online.

Course description

Aquaculture holds tremendous promises to alleviate the global increased demand for food. The rapid growth of the aquaculture sector also calls for research and development towards more sustainable solutions for aquaculture systems, species and feed development from renewable sources. A comprehensive planning for sustainable seafood production do not include only technical and biological concerns but must involve interactions between the aquaculture industry, researchers, authorities and the public at several levels.

This PhD course aims at presenting and discussing trans- and interdisciplinary methodologies to study the world鈥檚 aquaculture ecosystems and their possibilities to develop. The students will be introduced to 鈥淭he Triple Helix model鈥, a useful approach for integrating academic, public and industry partners as well as participatory design processes within the transdisciplinary approach as ways to unify stakeholder collaboration.

The course is aimed at PhD students with interest in production and management of marine bioresources through development of sustainable food production from the sea. The course will include lectures; preparatory literature study; student oral presentations; intensive group studies in collaborative team projects; and study visits to aquaculture sites and will be taught by international lecturer and local experts.

The course constitutes two parts:

1) one intensive week held at University 91探花鈥檚 marine research station, Kristineberg Research Center, which is located on the Swedish West Coast.  

2) an online part (4 weeks) during which groups of 2-4 students work together on one visionary aquaculture system, The system should be described and presented in its geographical, societal and value chain context, as well as presented.


Max 20 PhD students will be accepted.
