About Nicholas Charron

Nicholas Charron is a Professor at the Department of Political 91̽ and a Research Fellow at , University 91̽.

Areas of interest

Charron's research is concerned with comparative politics on political institutions, studies of corruption and quality of government and how these factors impact economic development with a focus on Europe and the US. He has also published one book on the quality of government within the European Union that focuses on both national and regional levels.

Current research

Charron's most recent work is on the effects and causes of bureaucratic institutions, electoral and democratic institutions, decentralization and causes and consequences of regional inequalities within countries in a comparative perspective. He also writes about the causes and consequences of the economic gaps at regional level within countries in Europe, and gender equality and corruption, as well as why EU citizens support / oppose further Europeanisation and cross-border redistribution within the EU.

Teaching and tutoring

Charron is responsible for the PhD course “Advanced statistical approaches for social scientists” on the PhD graduate level and teaches in several other graduate and undergraduate courses, including methods, comparative politics, US foreign policy and Quality of Government in a Comaprative Perspective'. He is has supervised many students at PhD, MA and undergraduate levels.

Papers and publications

Charron's papers have appeared or are due to appear in Journal of Politics, Journal of European Public Policy, Comparative Political Studies, Journal of Common Market Studies, International Studies Quarterly, European Journal of Political Research, Electoral Studies, Studies of Comparative International Development, Journal of Comparative Economics and Publius: The Journal of Federalism among several other journals. He has also published several policy reports, published by institutions such as the European Commission and SIEPS (‘Svenska Institutet för Europapolitiska Studier’), and published several op-ed media articles. He is also the editor and co-author (with Victor Lapuente and Bo Rothstein) of the book “The Quality of Government in European States and Regions” (Edward Elgar Press, 2013).
