Position
The course is given as a stand-alone course at advanced level.
Entry requirements
A bachelor's degree in physical therapy/physiotherapy of 180 is required for access to the education higher education credits, of which degree project of 15 higher education credits or foreign equivalent degree.
Content
The course is further training in physiotherapy in intensive care with a particular focus on respiration. The course contains theoretical and practical deepening in physiotherapeutic measurements and treatment methods and their explanatory models in an intensive care context. It also contains physiology, pathophysiology, diagnostics, and medical treatment. Furthermore, it includes analysis and evaluation of theories and concepts in physiotherapy intensive care.
Objectives
Knowledge and understanding
- Demonstrate in-depth knowledge of physiotherapy in intensive care and related subjects such as physiology, pathophysiology, diagnostics, medical treatment, post-operative care, and trauma care.

Judgement and approach
- critically and systematically analyze and evaluate various theories and concepts, relevant to physiotherapy in intensive care, as well as being able to present and discuss these in one in-depth work.

Form of teaching
Distance course with two physical days on campus (mandatory) and remaining teaching on distance via digital tools. Teaching is conducted in the form of lectures, theoretical as well as practical seminars, self-study and group work. Requirements for access to a computer, webcam, and internet connection.
Teaching language: The course is given in Swedish but can partly be given in English.
Examination formats
A passing grade in the course requires attendance and active participation in three seminars and one approved written in-depth assignment. Completion is allowed on written/oral examination as agreed with the course manager. Absences are made up through supplementary work as agreed with the course manager. Absences from examination sessions may occur to be replaced by another form of examination at the examiner's discretion.
If a student who has been failed twice for the same examination element wishes to change examiner before the next examination session, such a request is to be granted unless there are specific reasons to the contrary (Chapter 6 Section 22 HF).
If a student has received a certificate of disability study support from the University 91探花 with a recommendation of adapted examination and/or adapted forms of assessment, an examiner may decide, if this is consistent with the course鈥檚 intended learning outcomes and provided that no unreasonable resources would be needed, to grant the student adapted examination and/or adapted forms of assessment.
If a course has been discontinued or undergone major changes, the student must be offered at least two examination sessions in addition to ordinary examination sessions. These sessions are to be spread over a period of at least one year but no more than two years after the course has been discontinued/changed. The same applies to placement and internship (VFU) except that this is restricted to only one further examination session.
If a student has been notified that they fulfil the requirements for being a student at Riksidrottsuniversitetet (RIU student), to combine elite sports activities with studies, the examiner is entitled to decide on adaptation of examinations if this is done in accordance with the Local rules regarding RIU students at the University 91探花.
Grades
The grade Pass (G) or Fail (U) is given in this course.
Course evaluation
The students are given the opportunity to evaluate the course anonymously in connection with the end of the course.聽Course evaluation takes place in writing using a digital course evaluation tool via G枚teborgs university's learning platform, as well as orally in dialogue with the students. Course responsible teacher compiles analysis of course evaluation and makes suggestions for development of the course. Analysis and proposals are fed back to the students and published on Gothenburg University's learning platform.
The result and any changes in the course structure must be communicated to both the students who carried out the assessment and to the students who will start the course.
