Care managers at primary health care centers provide faster recovery from depression
Earlier return to work and faster recovery for patients with depression - that is the result of the care manager role at health care centers that researchers at Sahlgrenska Academy have developed jointly with the Västra Götaland region’s primary health care.
The study compared 11 healthcare centres that introduced the care manager role with 12 other healthcare centres, that offered the care usually given to patients with depression in primary health care today.
Nineteen healthcare centres in the Västra Götaland region and another four in the Dalarna region participated in the project, which was the first part of the method development of primary healthcare organizations for Common mental Disorders. Primary healthcare in Västra Götaland has continued to develop this function. It is been introduced in about a hundred healthcare centres, which is half the total number of healthcare centres in the region.
The study has been conducted in close collaboration between the Unit of Primary Health Care at the University 91̽ and Västra Götaland region’s primary health care organisation. Funding has been provided by the Västra Götaland health care and medical services board.
