Marcia Grimes is a lecturer at the Political 91Ě˝»¨ Department and researcher at , University 91Ě˝»¨.

Research interests

Grimes research interests include the role of civil society in combatting corruption, both in terms of contributing to societal accountability, as well as advocacy efforts to bring about legal and institutional change. Her earlier work focuses on whether citizens’ perceptions of fairness in decision making affect their inclination to trust political institutions.

Current research

Grimes' research currently examines the engagement strategies of civil society associations in Peru with a focus on understanding why they choose a particular strategy when trying to help their members. Civil society organizations can voice demands and demand accountability from government, but can also negotiate with individual politicians or officials to satisfy their needs, at times in exchange for political support. While the first way can strengthen democracy, the latter strategy can contribute to a so-called 'weak state trap', where the pressure and incentives to strengthen the capacity of state institutions are very low.

Teaching and tutoring

Grimes mainly teaches within the Master's program International Administration and Global Governance. She is also responsible for the Applied Methods course as well as a course module entitled "Politics of Development in the Global South" in the department's PhD program.
